In St. Lucia, building materials (cement, steel, etc.) are imported regionally and internationally. Modern architecture require us to do so, although initially decades ago, there was a lesser demand for these materials. Until 2-3 decades ago, there was a high reliance on ply-wood and timber needed for construction of 'colonial buildings'. Particularly being french-creole styled, they feature elements of both French & English influences imbuing the simplistic Caribbean architectural feel. Though outdated, we have kept this traditional theme in modern times through innovative methods. These buildings are commonly used commercially within the city centre, housing boutiques, offices and government agencies, While initially served as homes, we have kept it so when located in city residential zones.
