Dean Bridge at the west end of Edinburgh was built in 1831, open to pedestrians only until 1834 when it was opened to horse and cart traffic. It has never been structurally reinforced since its construction and can carry traffic up to 40 tonnes. This feat of civil engineering has contributed massively to its sustainability -- to date it has not needed to be replaced, and it allows the green spaces beneath it to remain as a public-access park. It currently has two lanes of traffic and pavement on either side. As a major traffic route from the city centre to the north of Scotland, traffic conditions have greatly improved with carefully-managed and -monitored smart traffic control systems in the surrounding streets, enabling a suitable flow of traffic to allow the maintainability and sustainability of this historic structure.
