As Amsterdam was a city forced to build itself around the water the early founders of the city decided to build it in a manner that they would best be able to utilize the water that they were given. They formed canals in rings that circle the city. This meant the new canals could be used for transport of goods and services, and people. This brilliant use of water in a city saves drastically on energy demand. It also serves as a sustainable means of transport in the future as the city moves away from auto and tram transportation.
