Module 7: Exercise 2 – Crucial Stocks and Flows: The Case of Daranak Falls, Tanay, Rizal, Philippines The picture above is taken from a famous tourist destination located in the Municipality of Tanay, Province of Rizal, Philippines. The Daranak Falls is one of the popular swimming and hiking destinations in the locality. The fourteen (14) meter high and thirty (30) meter deep falls is tucked calmly at the base of the mountains of Tanay. The stocks and flows that are crucial in this place are the following: Water, People, Density and Capital. The first stocks and flows element that is important in the area is Water. It is evident in the picture that water from the falls is used for recreational purposes. It is innocent to consider that this flowing fresh water is also used for irrigation of the vegetation in its vicinity and for drinking by the animals in the ecosystem. The flow of water is naturally dictated by the stream where it passes. It therefore replenishes the water stock in the ecosystem of the area and allows the existence of flora & fauna and most importantly the inhabitants of the Municipality; as referenced in the reading materials that “there is no city without water”. Translating it, water then becomes the lifeblood – essence of the city. It is essential for survival of living organisms and for recreation of its users. Another consideration based on the photograph is the stock of clean and potable water. Given the recreational benefits of the falls, the potability and quality of water is definitely affected. The stock of clean water that is fit for human consumption is lessened or will require additional processes in order to achieve potability, thus, stocks and flows of energy will be required for these processes. Second important element is People. The Daranak Falls is usually full of visitors during the weekends and summer months of March and April. As shown in the photo, this was taken on a Saturday of April. The swimmers consists both local inhabitants of Tanay and tourists or outside dwellers that contributes to the people stocks and flows. With this in mind, the Density of the locality is affected by the influx of stocks and flows of people. During the peak hours, the level of density is high and settles down during off-peak times. This density extends beyond the vicinity of the falls leading to the parking area and road networks. During the time when the photo was taken, a five minute hike was required due to the density of people heading to the falls. The density considered was that rapidly changing amount of visitors of the locality in a given time frame. Cumulatively, the Capital stocks and flows in the Daranak Falls are important to consider. As defined by Adam Smith, capital is a part of a Man’s stock which he considers and expects him revenue. Therefore, from the picture, the makeshift ring buoy – black tire interiors used by the swimmers bring in revenue to the local government. There is a rent on an hourly basis, for the use of these buoys. The People are directly affecting the Capital stocks and flows of the Daranak Falls. More influx of people entails higher revenue for the use of the floating device in addition to the entrance and parking fee of the Daranak Falls. It is clearly exemplified that the falls serves as the magnet for tourism of the local government, providing jobs and income for its local people through the water attraction. The falls completely becomes the anchor or driver of stocks and flows in the area; providing life and leisure to the community and holistically to the entire ecosystem of the municipality of Tanay, Rizal, Philippines.
