The photo was NOT taken by me; it is from UTE Institutional Page. Uruguay is a developed country and because of that our daily lives are heavily dependent on electricity. More than 10 years ago, we generated most of our electricity from hydropower and fossil fuels. However, because of our constant growth, driven not by our demography but mainly by our economy, our need for electricity grew and we had to import energy from our neighbors (Argentina and Brazil), or even generate it with fossil fuels. Both expensive alternatives. Our government decided to invest heavily in renewable energies. Offering tax cuts for local and international investors, and thus generating a great context for the construction of numerous wind farms, biomass plants and the installation of solar panel systems on houses, buildings and companies. Nowadays, not only we do not import energy, but we sell it to our neighbors. We are energy independent now and we greatly reduced our use of fossil fuels. More than 80% of our energy generation comes from renewable sources. I believe that the impact of the installation of these structures has already been surpassed by the positive results of these initiatives towards a more sustainable future.
