The public space that I chose is the San Rafael Public Transit Center; the area for commuting through San Rafael, California and other parts of Marin County. As soon as the train is operational, the Transit Center will accommodate buses, trains, airport shuttles and taxi service. The San Rafael Transit Center is a perfect example of simple, modern and efficient use of space. The California weather allows the Transit Center to have open-air terminals for the passengers to spend their time in. The design of the roofs are semi-transparent to allow the maximum amount of light inside the terminals. The Center has four terminals with roads between that are exclusive to transit vehicles that make passing through easier for buses, and other vehicles as shown in the picture, as well as safer for passengers to walk between terminals. The signage provided is easy to understand and guides passengers to the correct terminal or to the amenities provided by the Center. The lighting provided will contribute to the ease of use and safety for passengers using the Center at night. Each of the open-air sections have some seating with a roof for use in rain or shine. The Center also accommodates passengers with ATM and ticket machines because there is no ticket office provided. The section shown on the right side of the photo has a longer terminal to create more covered space for passengers, as well as providing something to eat and drink with vending machines and two cafes. The San Rafael Transit Center allows for people to travel through the city of San Rafael with ease, convenience and safety.
