1. Check the temperature differences in US cities Done. 2. Which are the main UHI effects that you can identify in your area? In Guayaquil the temperature during the day is very hot. So in the urban area, people inside buildings working at their offices have to turn on the air conditioner the entire workday. People in the streets don’t enjoy walking, because they sweat a lot, bicycle is not a good option for the same reason. People in cars, the ones that can, they use the air conditioner every time they are driving. All these, generates a lot of pollution and constant use of energy to improve the weather conditions. In the urban area, streets are made of concrete. There are tall buildings that cut the air circulation in downtown and high density of people during labor days. The rural areas are not surrounding with tall buildings. They have a better wind circulation and are usually surrounded by nature. 3. Which are the measures you would propose? Guayaquil weather is tropical and usually hot. No one can change that, but we can create or use less contaminating energy to improve our micro climate at home or work. Trying the a/c only when it´s too hot. And also, if we have to use the a/c, getting that energy through other mechanisms rather that the already use energy. Bringing and using more solar energy, wind power and other options. Planting trees is always helpful and necessary. I would love that Guayaquil could be a city where people use their bicycles more, but I think the first problem about that is our hot natural weather. So even though I would like these to happen, I wouldn’t consider it as a realistic solution. 4. Is UHI effect concerning policy making in your area? Not really. There is no culture of that in my area, but there should be. At colleges and in other South Americas countries, these topics are beginning to take shape. But so far in my city or area, are no that strong yet.
