UK overview. Pop: 63 million. Land: 24 million hectares, 74% agricultural. Climate: maritime. Daily avg temps to rise by 4C. Transport: rise number of vehicles. Accounts for 22% of GHG emissions. Waste: accounts for 3% of GHG emissions. Of the 3%, 82% came from landfills. 45% of waste is recycled. Energy consumption: total energy production is falling; bioenergy and waste energy is growing, 2012, 12% of UK energy came from low carbon sources. UK Climate Production Targets: reduce greenhouse gas emissions by 80% of 1990 levels by 2050; reduce emissions to 1725 MtCO2e by 2030 Reaching targets: 5 carbon budgets have been set in law, obliging government to prepare policies to ensure budgets are met. Policies encourage: energy efficiency improvements; innovation in technology; businesses and industry to replace high-carbon investments with low-carbon investments when considering new contracts My opinion: targets and approach are feasible, reductions are already evident. I would incentivise households for energy efficient improvements through low interest loans, invest heavily in public transport and electrify railways, and I would de-incentivise private vehicle use by increasing taxes and lessening budgets for increasing road carrying capacities.
