1. UK dominant fossil fuels are oil and natural gas. After production, imports and exports, oil was 53.5 million tonnes in 2015; natural gas was 37.9 million tonnes. 2. The dominant use for oil was transport: 97%. 79.68% of natural gas was used by residential, commercial and public services, and 19.26% was used by industry. 3. Policies for improving environmentally friendly / sustainable sources of energy and reducing energy consumption: a. Investing in research and improving renewable energy sources at industry and university levels b. Extending grants to farmers / landholders to use land for solar panels and wind turbines c. Tax rebates or interest free loans for the installation of solar panels and small wind and hydro turbines d. Nationally set tariffs to sell energy back to the national grid to encourage home power generation e. Tax incentives for constructing ‘passive houses’ f. Low interest loans to home owners for increasing energy efficiency such as installing triple glazing and insulation g. Rigorous building regulations for newly built houses in terms of energy efficiency h. Subsidised public transport i. Only hybrid or electric cars to be used after a cut-off date
