Provisioning Services: Chesterfield is surrounded by fields supporting agriculture and livestock production. Additionally, food growing is also carried out on a smaller scale, in people’s gardens or on land leased from the council called ‘allotments’. On public land, various fruit trees have also been planted to which people can help themselves. Cultural Ecosystem services: There are many large park areas giving users space to run around and play; fishing ‘jetties’ are free to use along many stretches of Chesterfield canal, many of which are wheelchair accessible. There is also a large network of bike paths in the area, providing recreational possibilities and the ability to commute without having to use congested roads. Habitat Services: along many of Chesterfield canal’s stretches, quieter ‘indents’ and outlets / ponds of water are provided for birds. This service sustains migratory bird patterns and resident wildlife, and encourages a wide mixture of vegetation so that natural habitats are sustained. Regulating Services: Chesterfield draws its water supply largely from three reservoirs. There are family friendly walking trails around the lake, and many bird boxes, encouraging wild life. The benefits are a dual purposed safe and sustainable water supply combined with some cultural ecosystem services.
