I work in the central Stockholm and every day I pass one of the biggest construction projects, Slussen (water locks, transport, new bridges, tunnels, terminals…) I wasn’t sure how to comment on global impact only from the picture itself. I could do a research on different machinery manufacturers with origin in Germany, Japan and US. I went down to research on materials used and took an example of steel used. The new Slussen will be supported by 3000 piles provided by steel manufacturer SSAB. Since 2016 the company delivered 3600 tons of steel to the project. Here we get to the global impact. The steel company uses resources from all around the world ad I found out on their website (https://www.ssab.com/company/sustainability/responsible-partner/responsible-sourcing) but still using Swedish resources too. Another material used is timber for help scaffolding and since I can’t comment on the origin, I know that Sweden is very protective for their timber sources, so it might come from other countries as well. Another aspect of globalised economy are the people working on construction. In Sweden just as much as in other countries, construction is a field with large number of immigrants working on large scale projects.
