The picture chosen shows the interior of the Butterfly Pavilion, at the Botanical Garden, in Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic. In a sort of experimental basis, some structures using bamboo have been built in the country, some small houses, kiosks, other pavilions. Also the planting of bamboo has been encouraged, and different varieties introduced as part of an agreement in which Taiwan is providing technical as well as financial support. But the idea has not been put to test on a greater scale, as it has been done in nearby Colombia for example, in which bamboo has been used to as part of the supporting structure for 2 and 3 stories buildings. One reason could be the lack of sufficient craftsmen with the skills necessary to do the constructions. others may be lack of knowledge about the possibilities offered by the material, constraints imposed by building codes, and even marketing due to the preponderance on concrete construction. Another reason could be the fear of damage by weather, especially if a hurricane should affect the buildings. It would need to be far more examples people can see for bamboo to be accepted, and more of the raw material available.
