My name is Stephan Schmatz and I am living in Krems an der Donau, Austria. But for this exercise I am showing a photo of the "Speicherstadt" in Hamburg, Germany. Hamburg is located at the mouth of the Alster into the Elbe. As you might know, one of the biggest ports of Europe is located in Hamburg. So, the water used to be and still is a very important infrastructure for Hamburg. Similar to Venice, there are a lot of canals (called "Fleeten") in Hamburg. For centuries, these canals have been used for transport, for example in the "Speicherstadt", a quarter consisting of warehouses that have been used around the 19th century. Goods have been stocked in these warehouses and were transported to the ports on ships. Today, water is still important as the port is steadily growing. But the canals in the cities are now mainly used for boat tours and recreational purposes.
