FC-01x Future Cities (Self-Paced) - Exercise 1 : "Making the Invisible - Visible"
Uploaded on 2018-04-10 by Hayley
This image was taken in downtown Philadelphia on a Saturday afternoon. It was shot from a side street just off of Broad Street, a major road cutting through the heart of the city. Both car and foot traffic is visible through this area. While there aren't many cars or pedestrians on this side street, the perpendicular streets are considerably more active. Pedestrians and parked cars outnumber moving cars. Street and building signs indicate landmarks, attractions, and historic locations. The light coats worn by pedestrians indicate that it is tolerably chilly. Invisible - The Masonic Temple (building not in photo) showcases the historical significance of local freemasons. It is a large, 150-year-old building with elaborate architecture and interior styling, revealing the size and wealth of past generations of Philadelphia's freemasons. The presence of foot traffic on one street but not another, as well as the relative abundance of foot travel vs car travel, indicates areas of economic activity and preferred ways to move around the city. Areas with many cars parked and many pedestrians on foot could be used to place parking garages and subway stations and areas with many uber drivers could act as maps of the subway routes.
