As I live in Sydney, Australia, and I can approximate from the information of the US cities that Sydney would be very similar to Los Angeles. It is much hotter in the Sydney CBD area (which is where I work) than in the nearby rural areas. This is largely due to the vast amount of roads, buildings and infrastructure in the CBD. To help reduce the UHI effect in Sydney CBD, I would put on a lower height cap on the various buildings in the city and suggest that the boundaries between each building be a longer distance so that it is not as narrow and jammed as it is now. Unfortunately Sydney currently is undergoing some very anti-climate change legislation in which we are following Los Angeles’s design to build more high ways and invest less in public transport. It’s quite devastating and working backwards.
