I usually commute by scooter or motorcycle since it is most reliable and takes least amount of time. During adverse weather condition such as extreme temperatures and rainfall, I most often travel by car for obvious reasons. I would much prefer riding bicycle to university but there are no dedicated bike-lanes in the city and it is very unsafe sharing road with cars and trucks on a bike especially when traffic rules are rarely followed. Going by walk is not easy since university is about 5 km from my place. Temperature during daytime is often above 30°C and can go up to 45°C during summer. Public transportation system in the city is still in its infancy. Best option will require me to walk 2 km to a bus stop. From there I will be travelling 3 km by bus and walk an additional 0.5 km. Moreover, frequency of buses is rather low and there is no schedule available for them. Similar to the situation in most Indian cities, auto rickshaws provide a quasi-public transport in Rohtak and are quite useful when someone is not using a personal vehicle. It is an inefficient alternative to a functional public transport system since it congests roads and make lot of emissions. Nevertheless, it helps a lot of people get around in the city but is not particularly useful in my case. They ply only on major roads and I will have to walk 1.5 km from my home to board one. Almost everyone who can afford personal vehicles, use one. This is to a certain extent because public transport system is just not there and people don't complain about it either since car is a more than a mode of transport. It is comfortable, gives freedom of mobility and is a also a status symbol for upwardly mobile middle class.
