I measured 27c in the city of Johannesburg and 18c in Benoni which is a more suburban area of Jbrg the picture is of the city Center, where you can see high rises and close density of buildings. If I could impose new measures to lower the UHI, I would propose Planting trees: increasing shade will lower temperatures Green roofs: as they provide shade and remove heat from the air through evapotranspiration, they absorb heat and act as insulators for the houses Using energy efficient appliances: to reduce the load on the electrical grid Installing cold roofs(reflecting roofs): reflect sunlight and heat away from the buildings, reducing roof temp and reducing the amount or air conditioning needed. Johannesburg is planning to green the city with emphasis on public transport; roads and parking lots can be used as urban forests and gardens. There will be a conscious shift in transport, investing in rapid bus systems and cycling lanes, to change the spatial dynamics of the city. Mixing low cost and high cost housing and providing large green park ps the system doesn't allow to upload more than 1 picture...
