Most liveable cities: 1. Helsinki, 2. Copenhagen, 3. Amsterdam, 4. Stockholm, 5. Toronto Characteristics of liveable: 1. Safety 2. Culture and activities 3. Varied and efficient transport 4. Availability of homes and jobs 5. Access to nature Status of my own city of Stockholm: My 5 characteristics are pretty typical of the Nordic countries but they tend to be lower on the culture/activity scores, especially compared to New York, London or Paris. For the most part Stockholm is safe although there is the perception that it isn't, and some of this is true. This is related to my 4th point since Stockholm is notorious for its complete lack of homes and 600000 people are in the queue for a rental. There are plenty of jobs but no place to live so this forces people (myself included) to live very far from work. The response to the housing shortage has been painfully slow. Transport is efficient if you live in the centre but the railway infrastructure is not sustainable. In this case Copenhagen tops my list as this is a true cycle city. Stockholm does have culture and plenty of nature. So it is on the way to liveable.
