Module_6: Compulsory_Exercise_3. 1.What_are_the_dominant_fossil_fuels_used_in_your_country? According_to_Sankey_Diagram the_main_fossil_fuel used in New_Zealand is oil_(produced-2.16Mtoe_and_imported-5.45Mtoe) with_share_of 31.2%_equal_to_7.46Mtoe. If we include the oil products(8.9Mtoe_or_8.9%) then_ the common share becomes 40.1%_or_9.79Mtoe. Second is gas consumption accounting 4.04Mtoe(16.6%) and third comes the coal_fuel (produced_0.22Mtoe _and_imported_1.94Mtoe) with_share_of_8.9%_or_2.16Mtoe. 2.Where_are_the_dominant_fossil_fuels_mainly_used_for_in_your_country? The oil fuel is mainly used in Transportation estimated by_4.81Mtoe followed_by Others (i.e. residential, commercial and public services) with 0.65Mtoe and Industry(0.42Mtoe). Gas is the main source for the Industry covering 29%(1.24Mtoe) of its energy needs. Almost the same amount of gas is needed in power stations (1.21Mtoe) and little less in Non-Energy Use (1.08Mtoe). Coal is mainly used as energy source in power stations. 3. The_new_policies of_New_Zealand should comprise provisions_for_eliminating transport_emissions_of_CO2. This includes more electric cars/buses and more cycleways. People should be encouraged to use public transport through more reliable and effective services. Furthermore residential needs of fossil fuel energy sources can decrease substantially if all residential_buildings are well designed, i.e. insulated properly, double glazed, optimal solar exposure etc. Residential_usage_of gas and other fossil fuels for heating can be substituted with renewable_energy and energy_efficient_design like ‘passive house’. In addition the_electricity_sector already_relies mainly_on_hydro_and_Geothermal sources but_still_uses gas(1.21Mtoe)_and_coal(0.45Mtoe) for electricity production. This is something that can be improved in future.
