Compulsory Exercise 2: Part 2: 2.Which are the main UHI effects that you can identify in your area? We can talk about UHI in Auckland, mainly in the central zone. There are several negative effects related to it. They are consequences of the increased temperature like energy consumption, impaired water quality and discomfort. The increased temperature in the Central zone is easily observed during nighttime when due to the UHI there is reduced air cooling. Many documents like Feedback on the Draft Auckland Unitary Plan , Auckland Design Manual, Greening cities - The University of Auckland, articles like ‘Auckland warming is deception’ and others confirm that there is UHI in Auckland but they do not give the exact temperature difference between the different districts in Auckland and the rural surroundings. The same sources suggest different measures for mitigating the UHI effect. In the article ‘Auckland warming is deception’ by Barry Brill, Chairman of the New Zealand Climate Science Coalition one of the conclusions is: “As a result of urbanisation and sheltering, the Albert Park weather station (1909-76) suffered from progressive ‘heat island’ effects. This accounted for warming in excess of 0.4°C during 1940-70, and probably a similar amount during 1910-30.”
