In this image we may see: On-grade roads Traffic lights Street lights Solar red light camera Directional Signage Electrical switchboxes Flyover Port with cranes and container ships Private cars and buses Public bus The movement and content of the containers in the port can be monitored and measured. Sources, types and volumes of cargo can give us information on global connectivity and demand. In 2009, volumes of containers in Singapore’s ports were noticeably reduced, even to the naked eye, representing the downturn in international trade during the recession. As flows in the port are closely observed a better understanding of requirements can lead to consolidation or relocation of the ports, thus clearing the coastline for inhabitation. This newly constructed intersection is no doubt equipped with the latest monitoring and control functions. Traffic flows can be recorded and managed. A camera (powered by the sun) can collect data on cars passing through the intersection, this could be meshed with data from electronic road pricing tags to track individual cars (this is more a ‘big brother’ outcome than a liveability outcome).
