According to the Sankey diagram for south Africa, the countries majority supply of energy is based on coal. This source is non-renewable and therefore cannot be a permanent solution. The policy that I would suggest would be as follows: TRANSPORT The largest consumer of energy in South Africa is transportation. Companies are required to prioritise employees who live within a maximum travel radius of 20km. Should there be an exception, the employee should be required to find accommodation within the 20km region within 6 months of employment or provide evidence of non-vehicular travel. Non-vehicular travel will be promoted by means of bicycles situated in the city for public use. These bicycles will be privately monitored and rented out to individuals travelling within the city. REDUCTION OF C02 The enforcement of natural ventilation and solar shading devices in office blocks will dramatically reduce the requirement for airconditioners and thus reduce energy demand and waste (see images) Highly reflective colours and materials will be required for finishes on all new buildings in order to prevent the UHI from making the outdoor areas less livable.
