Penang is an island similar to Singapore but it has not reach the stage of development where Singapore is currently at. However, it is developing at a rapid speed. Thus there is a need for land for transportation, residential and commercial purpose. As we can see in the picture that there is a huge reclamation project happening here along Gurney Drive. 1. People. The people who were living there are no longer staying in this area and have long move out to more mature area. 2. Buildings. Many residential houses have already been converted to commercial structures. 3. Fisherman. 30-40 years ago there we many fisherman along the shore. However, due to development we hardly see any now. As people progress they tend to move to a more mature area. Thus we can see the far end of the picture there are many high rise buildings for residential. On top of that with ever growing population, scarcity of land became a problem. Reclamation will provide more land to accommodate future population, job growth and economy. Penang has a lot to learn from Singapore. Especially land use and transportation system.
