1. Referring to the IEA Sankey diagram for India, the dominant fossil fuels used in India are, Coal and Oil. They comprise of 382 and 249 Million tonnes of oil equivalent respectively. Out of 249 Mtoe of oil, 207 Mtoe is imported and the rest is produced by the country itself. Out of 382 Mtoe of coal, 263 Mtoe is produced by the country itself and the rest is imported. 2. Dominant fuels are mainly used in following industries: a) Coal is majorly used as an input to the power stations (254 Mtoe)*, which further generate electricity to feed the various industries. Also, 94 Mtoe of coal is used by various other industries. b) Oil is majorly used by transportation. (81 Mtoe) *Mtoe = Million tonnes of oil equivalent. 3. One of the most dominant fuel, Oil is majorly imported. This imported oil is further used in the transportation sector. Now, this is hampering the economy (costs of importing the resource) as well as the environment (through the by-products of combustion of oil) of the country. I propose a policy to strictly restrict the oil driven transportation systems, and convert it to a hybrid or electric battery driven transportation.
