Rotterdam has the most polluted air in The Netherlands and even in Europe. That’s due to our super dense network of roads (for cars) and the additional traffic jams. Because of this, public transport becomes more and more important in city centres. In fact, people who live in the city center often completely depend on public transport, because they cannot even have a car (no space to park and traffic jams). But the trams have a major vulnerability issue: the overhead lines for energy supply. In the city’s design the tram lanes very often cross the car roads, which increases the risk of having a too high vehicle damaging the overhead lines of the tram. When this happens, the damage is big and no tram can cross that area until the damage is repaired. That leaves people having to choose for other options for transportation: walking, cycling or taking a bus.
