Johannesburg, South Africa - Going back to the 17th and 18th centuries South Africa (especially Cape Town) was rich in Fruit, Vegetable, Fresh Water, Meat and Wine stocks. As the trade route between Europe and the Far East was being exploited by sea-men, explorers and traders the constant flow of ships up and down the East and West coasts of Africa created a flow of primarily Spice and Wine, but also (Humans) Settlers, Huguenots and Immigrants. Later, during the 18th century - with UK sanctions against the South African Wine trading - the Gold and Diamond rush/es created a flow of "Miners" who trekked from the Cape to the (then) Transvaal - an arduous trek over mountains and Lion occupied planes in search of the stocks of the Gold Reef. Today, 100's of years later we still have a steady flow (import & export) of fruit, vegetables, precious metals (and still wine) stocks. Even though it is now 100's of years later, we now have an alarming qty of illegal immigrants mining illegally for our Gold and Diamond stocks. The attached photo is of the Vaal river. The migrants would have had to cross it when they trekked North.
