We are very fortunate in South Africa in that we are a producing nation. We produce almost all our own construction materials: Concrete/Cement (PPC), Steel, Copper, Aluminium, Roof tiles, we kiln our own bricks (Corobrick), pavers and paint (Delux), etc, etc, etc. We even produce our own toilet bowls, cisterns, sanitary ware, taps, mixers (Cobra), etc. In most homes you will not find imported materials, fixtures or fittings. The specification of the building (especially commercial buildings) does however at times ask for imported materials. One such example is tiles. We do produce our own tiles (Johnson), but import Chinese or Italian full body (or glazed) Porcelain tiles.
