FC-01x Future Cities (Self-Paced) - Exercise 2: "Stocks and Flows"
Uploaded on 2016-07-28 by David
First, identify the most important stocks and flows (at least three) entering, staying in and eventually leaving your area (or city): - Food - Water - Energy Describe your findings based on the concept of stocks and flows by presenting the necessary information or examples: - Food is a stock and flow, as some food is grown in the city but most of it imported from elsewhere in the UK or abroad. For example, fresh fruit, meat, spices - Water is drawn mostly from reservoirs in more rural/mountainous districts to the North. There are some small reservoirs and large sewage treatment plants in the city which are stocks, however, the majority of the water flows in from artificial reservoirs. - Energy is almost entirely generated remotely at power plants using coal, nuclear or hydro. This is a flow. Some solar energy and wind energy is generated in the city which is a stock. Imagine and shortly describe how these stocks and flows could change in the future for the benefit of your area: - Food supply could change if urban farming increases - Water supply could change in the event of a drough, more water would have to be imported - Energy supply could change if more sustainable technologies are adopted, meaning we have a greater stock of energy in the city through solar, wind or other sustainable methods of generation
