FC-01x Future Cities (Self-Paced) - Exercise 2: "Stocks and Flows"
Uploaded on 2017-11-16 by Daisy Baur
The most important stocks and flows in my city I would like to discuss here are namely; 1) Land, 2) Food, 3) People. Firstly, Port Moresby city has a land mass of approximately 250 square kilometers of which 2/3 have been taken up by built environment. Most of the remainder is mountain ridges and big hills. The image shows unsustainable land use practice by illegal settlers excavating hill slopes. The stock of conserved hills are being taken up in such developments resulting in the soil not properly disposed off where needed and without proper retaining walls all are exposed to weathering and erosion. These soil carried away by rain into the storm water drainage system result in sedimentation which further results in the clogging of drains and result in frequent flash floods. The constant supply of food for the city comes from other provinces and from the neighboring hinterlands. Though there is potential of farming there are no agricultural land within the city as a result vegetables are brought in and sold in bulk then retailed at the markets. The population of the city is constantly growing as more and more rural to urban migration is taking place.
