Over the weekend a news article was published in the Sydney Morning Herald entitled "Is Sydney really full?" (Nov 4, 2017). Many residents of Sydney have voiced concerns in regards to the overpopulation of Sydney as the city is expected to grow by an additional 100,000 people annually over the next 20 years. There are fears that infrastructure, particularly the supply of housing, roads and public transportation will struggle to keep up with this future demand. As a result a debate has been ignited surrounding the issue of urban density. Despite density comparisons to other large global cities, particularly in Asia, culturally many residents of Sydney find high density living difficult to accept. My new CityApp would allow residents to rate Sydney suburbs according to their perceived density and satisfaction. This would enable governments to understand overall feelings towards urban density in our city whilst also providing governments and planners with a map of where residents may be more open to higher density living for future planning growth. This gives all of us a clearer idea of where urban development may be needed and gives residents a voice in the future planning of their neighbourhoods.
