*image taken by Andrew Shee, another collaborator on this project. The image shows the construction of the first Earthship (http://earthship.com/Systems) project in Malaysia. The Earthship is constructed out of recyclable and/or readily available materials, including glass bottles, rubber tyres, sand, etc. It is also designed to be entirely off-the-grid and self-sustaining, tapping into resources available locally. Although this is far from typical construction processes and materials, the materials also come from all over the world. The rubber tyres used for the foundation very likely made the trip out of South East Asia, where they are produced, to Germany, where they are engineered, and back. The glass bottles used for daylighting very likely originated from either Japan or the European Union, where the world's leading glass manufacturers are based. The plastic and gurney sacks likely derived from China, which is the world's largest manufacturing economy.
