1. What are the dominant fossil fuels used in your country? I live in Iran, with an economy based on oil and natural gas products. So, these two are not only the major fossil fuel in my country, but they’re also major sources of energy in general. 2. Where are the dominant fossil fuels mainly used for in your country? Other (mostly residential use), transport, industry 3. It is your task to create a new policy in order to improve the environmental friendly and sustainable sources and consumption of energy of your country. How would you do that? Think of how you can improve the sources and the consumption of energy. By looking at the diagrams it is clear that the major energy source for residential use in Iran is natural gas. We use gas to heat our houses in the winter, to cook, etc. Electricity also comes from natural gas and is used in many ways mainly in residents. This energy source (natural gas) can be partially replaced with renewable sources like hydropower and wind energy, given the many rivers and windy plains in Iran. Implementing photovoltaic cells to store solar energy during days is another way to reduce dependency upon fossil fuels. Right now only a very small part of energy for residential use comes from solar power, but it can be much more considering Iran’s sunny weather most of the times. The major energy source for transportation in Iran are oil and its products, because nearly all the cars in Iran run with oil and public transportation is highly insufficient and inefficient. I think by producing electricity from renewable energy sources and developing public transportation using electricity, we could have more sustainable and human friendly cities. Individual battery cars that run with solar power can also reduce fossil fuel use by a large amount, considering that most of the cars are used with only one person to go to work and back home every day. Imagine how much of air pollution and heat released from these cars!
