In the United Kingdom the dominant fossil fuels are both oil and gas as seen in the 2014 IEA Sankey Diagram. These mainly become used for transport uses and what is defined as ‘other’ uses. In my own city of Aberdeen we are the oil capital of the country. However, there are much more sustainable options that are not being used effectively. Up in the North Sea there is a huge opportunity for the production of tidal wave power due to the powerful seas. This is not a notable source of energy at the moment as too much focus is given to the oil opportunities in the North Sea. However, with the question of how much oil is remaining, this may be the perfect time to start exploring this new avenue of energy production. By improving the source of energy to renewables it will vastly improve the ecological impact of our energy demands. We need to fully take advantage of our coastline and seas, as they offer us more than beautiful views and beaches! Additionally, we need to look at how we use our energy. There seems to be an emphasis on the exploration of ecologically responsible transportation energy production. This is appropriate as in the 2014 Sankey Diagram transportation was using the most fossil fuels. However, this is still of limited implementation and for it to have a notable impact on our energy use these new technologies need to become more widespread and normal practise.
