Uploaded on 2017-08-22 by -evelyn
• Step 1: List the five most liveable cities that you know, based on your own experience and judgment, placing the most liveable city at the top of the list. Las Palmas de Gran Canaria Copenhagen Stockholm Bern London • Step 2: Describe in your own words five characteristics that according to your opinion make a city liveable. Order them placing the most important at the top of the list. * Liveliness Autonomy for children/ Safety Commuting Culture Healthcare • Step 3: Describe the status of your own city in terms of the five characteristics that you listed above. Propose how your city should/could be transformed in relation to these characteristics in order to be more sustainable. I have traveled quite a bit and I have noticed that the parameters change as your circumstances change. I used to live in London and think it was the best place to live. Now that I have a family I appreciate other things. In Las Palmas de Gran Canaria the city I live in has a balanced climate that allows things to happen in public space. It is therefore a lively place. It is also a safe place and especially for children. It is, of course, part of the culture but also the safety. In most cases cities that are not safe are unequal cities where income gaps are huge. It is important to maintain equality in cities and Las Palmas de Gran Canaria is no exception. The city is a relatively small city only 800.000 inhabitants. Long distances are not a problem, but as the city will grow it is something to keep in mind, especially in relationship to sustainability. Wind and Solar power resources have to be maximized. Culture is an important factor. The problem with smaller cities is that they often do not have such a great offer. Spain has an excellent healthcare system. Everything can be improved of course, but compared to other counties such as Switzerland it is relatively affordable and easily accesed. The image shows children playing on the “city beach”. A livable city is a resilient city. I have taken this picture myself, however I would appreciate if it wasn´t published since it shows children and this is always a sensitive subject.
