1. Think and comment on an existing Citizen Design Science project in urban design and planning from your area or country. Basque country has always had a very solid base of neighborhood and other kinds of associations, and so, citizen participation processes are quite widespread. Bilbao sits deep in the mountains, leaving little room for housing. One of the free spaces in the city is the island of Zorrozaurre, located in the ria of Bilbao. This island today is inhabited by mostly factories, some rehabilitated, in which cultural activities, sports, etc are carried out and some quite old residential buildings. The city council decided to urbanize it and entrusted to the architect Zaha Hadid. The plan did not take into account the uses of the area today and planned to demolish most of the existing buildings. The organization and public mobilization has changed the idea of the city council and has launched a project in which the administration and neighbors work together to adapt Zaha's plan to today's reality and throw as few buildings as possible, Maintaining the neighborhood environment that exists today. 2. Think and comment on the following example: Habitats of a certain neighborhood don’t feel safe when they walk in their neighborhood in the evening and during the night. You are working for the local government and want to solve this problem through improvement of the public spaces. How would you start-up a Citizen Design Science project? * First, I would contact the different neighborhood associations and other active groups in the area to convene a meeting in which I can explain the project to carry out. Since they know the neighborhood well, their people and have a much more solid base, I would take into account the inputs they would give me. From there, I would schedule workshops where members of these associations and, of course, all the neighbors who wanted, could share their impressions and locate those black spots of insecurity, and we would also visit those areas. Then I would start working on the proposal. Once the idea was worked out, I would go back to the neighborhood to get the impressions about it and get a feel for the people's opinions. 3. Imagine that you have set up a project wherein you would like to make use of Citizen Design Science. Which guidelines are important in creating your own Citizen Design Science project? ** • Working with already existing local associations and teams. • Ensuring the participation of different demographic groups in the neighborhood in order to have more inputs. • Keeping an open mind and being as transversal as possible, understanding the complexity of the subject. • Checking the results so as to learn what went wrong or right and take it into account in future projects.
