1. WHICH ARE YOUR TOP LIVEABILITY CRITERIA? 1. Safety 2. Job Opportunity 3. Housing 4. Health Care 5. Transportation 2. WHY DO WE LIVE WHERE WE LIVE? I currently reside in the city of Lucknow, capital city of the biggest state in India, i.e. Uttar Pradesh. Being my hometown from birth, I essentially stay here because of my family. The city being the state capital has several plus points of its own some of them being- good opportunities in education, being located in the Indo-Gangetic Plain the climate is predominantly comfortable for Indians. The state capital also has good Intra- national as well as Inter-national connectivity as well as has plenty of job opportunities for its citizens. Been born and brought up in the city of Lucknow, the affiliation with the place in terms of comfort and closeness to family is of utmost importance, though judging on the wider concept of “Liveability”; certain aspects are at stake: a. Safety: The city tends to be unsafe at later hours of the day, especially for women, due to lack of development of public infrastructure, a proper security system and mis-governance. (10/20) b. Job Opportunity: Though plenty jobs are available, their scope tends to be limited, with lesser exploration in various fields.(15/20) c. Housing: Essentially adequate, for all classes of society, several slums are prevalent, with people living in inhabitable living and sanitary conditions.(15/20) d. Health Care: Not essentially available at ease and feasible for all strata of society. Development is further required in facilities available, and infrastructure.(15/20) e. Transportation: More development in terms of intra and intercity connectivity is required, with more emphasis given to public transport, private, and train networks required.(15/20) Total of 70/100 as per my liveability criteria 4. WHAT WOULD YOU CHANGE? Public infrastructure, such as streetscapes, public hardscapes, roads, foot bridges are required to be taken special care of, to make the city safer and more habitable. Sanitary conditions essentially require more development, due to flooding, and clogging of water in the monsoons, and the uncovered drains leading to several health issues- such as insect borne diseases: malaria, dengue, and food borne diseases. The overall development of the city should be taken with the concept of sustainable development in mind. 5. WHY DO WE MOVE? There are several places in India, which I would consider as having better liveability: such as Bangalore, Mumbai, Delhi, Pune, and Hyderabad. I would consider moving to these places because of: a) Availability of job opportunities, b) Better/ Higher Education c) Better Economic Conditions d) Better Infrastructure e) Better Safety
