Heat island effect in Auroville 1. On the website it is clear to see the urban heat islands in the city areas are significantly warmer than their surrounding rural areas due to human activities. 2. In Auroville the urban heat island phenomenon is practically non-existent because the whole city area has been heavily re-afforested in the past fifty years. Today there are actually more tree and green canopies in Auroville than in the surrounding villages. This means that solar irradiation is minimised and the temperature is cooler in Auroville by a few degrees celsius. 3. I would propose working with nature and planting as many trees as possible to naturally mitigate the problem of UHI. Also using sustainable building technics that are cleverly designed to use minimal to zero net energy for cooling or heating would keep the temperatures to a comfortable level. 4. I Auroville there are no official policies to reduce the UHI effect, but there is a common consensus and awareness that we should do everything possible to work with nature and to be as sustainable and responsible as possible. I hope more cities follow this example.
