"Construction used to be a localised activity, but with the advancement of construction processes and construction materials almost every building contains components of a globalized economy." The construction in Hong Kong is definitely a global process. As you fly in you see construction barges, which dredge material from the ocean floor, sailing in and out of Hong Kong harbor. Construction labour is provided by residences, but mainly by mainland Chinese and other immigrants. Construction materials are sourced from all over the world, particularly mainland China due to it's proximity and manufacturing capabilities. Lastly, Hong Kong is financed by hundreds of international entities, predominantly British and Chinese due to history of the city, but more and more, buildings are being opened to the international realm. Hong Kong stands as an entry way to China, and provides a bridge between East and West, as a result, construction, planning, maintenance, funding and materials are all part of a global economy, which shapes this unique city.
