The most important stocks and flows for the Oslo city region are water & landskape, people, energy, material, density, pollution, capital and information. Example Water: Water is both stock and flow. Oslo is situated on the Oslofjord and sourrounded by the Marka, a big wooden landscape with several lakes. The lakes store the drinkingwater (stock) for the about 600.000 inhabitants. The fjord is used to transport people by boat, produces food (fish and seefood) and is used for leisure activities. The river Akerselva, separating the city in a eastern and a western part, flows into the fjord. In former times it was used to produce water energy, but I think thats if at all just a marginal quantity of the energy that Oslo consumes nowadays. Example energy: Norway is lucky, because they produce a lot of renewable waterenergy from snow(stock) melting in the mountains and running down rivers (flows). But they also take/procuce oil from oilfields (stock) in the norwegian water territories. Oslo as the capital city and city with most inhabitants in Norway consumes a lot of energy per inhabitant. Energy is used for example for import of food, products and materials and transportation. Example people: Oslo and the Akershus area, the surrounding region, are growing areas (flow), this means more people are moving to or getting born, than die or move away. During the last decade many people from Europe, Northern Afrika and Pakistan came to work in the Oslo region. This flow of people seems to continue, allthough the counties of origine change over time. People living and staying in Oslo could be seen as a stock of people. They work, produce capital, eat and consume, need a place to live, move around and produce waste and pollution - a dynamic system of stocks and flows. The Oslo region can improve air quality and reduce noice pollution by improving the public transportations system and making it more attactive and safe to cycle and go. Cars should loose its importance. Buildings should be constructed mainly in wood (storing Co2, renewable) produced as localy as possible. Oslo needs to get more dense around the important public transportation centres and take care for its green and blue surrounding landscapes. The lifestyle of the inhabitants could change towards a less consume oriented perspective.
