La Serena, Chile 1. Visible Information On the left side of the picture we can see a residential area with two floors paired houses with small front yards. Then there is a two-way street with high traffic. And on the right side of the picture we can see part of a hill, which is the Santa Lucia´s Park. 2. Invisible Information a. The residential sector shown in the photo is a village inhabited by families of military and police, the neighborhood is safe, clean and the fact that the residents are co-workers creates a community and family environment in the area. b. The residential sector could highly activate the park, but there were no people in the park (rarely are people). This will probably happen because the area is divided by a high-speed and high-demand street, therefore the park becomes unsafe and loses its potential to bring together families and children. 3. How can we use this knowledge for design and planning to make a more livable urban space? (b) We all know the importance of parks and the public space in the cities, but it is not enough to have great parks in the city if they do not have appropriate access and security guaranteed. They will not be used. Gather information about the rush hours, noise pollution, accident statistics, speed, lighting etc. can help improve road infrastructure for better use, access and safety of the public spaces.
