5 most liveable cities based on my experiences: 1. Amsterdam, Netherlands 2. Cincinnati, United States of America 3. Auckland, New Zealand 4. Stockholm, Sweden 5. Dharwad-Hubbali twin city in Karnataka state region in India 5 characteristics that according to my opinion make a city liveable: 1. Security and safety 2. Air Quality and Environment Quality 3. Natural Elements and Green Cover 4. Less population, more community interaction 5. Public plazas and open areas for recreation The city where I live is New Delhi. It comprises of National Capital Region and includes cities from neighboring states of Haryana, Uttar Pradesh and Rajasthan. Following are my perspective on the status of my city based on characteristics stated above and along with them proposed solutions 1. Security and safety- Delhi is notorious for being the Crime Capital of India and the most unsafe city for women. Even during the day, one has to alert to not travel on the secluded streets of the city. Proposal- Install CCTV camers to monitor criminals, more police vigilante for safety of women. 2. Air and Environment Quality- The air quality of New Delhi is certainly deteriorating day by day with Anand Vihar region topping the list always. Since the number of vehicles plying on the roads has increased drastically over the last decade so has the Urban Heat Island Effect due to increase in population and subsequently more housing/complexes coming up. Proposal- Reduction in number of cars, more comprehensive public transport, car-free days. 3. Natural Elements and Green Cover - Delhi has a couple of forest cover areas, where construction activities are prohibited and water body in the form River Yamuna flowing through the city. Yet these natural elements do little to make Delhi green city. Many residential areas of Delhi are highly dense with no provision of public parks and these people have to travel a long way to get to India Gate or Connaught Place in Central Delhi to enjoy greens. Proposal- More public parks in residential areas, open and vacant lands to be converted to recreation areas 4. Less population, more community interaction- Since people come to Delhi in search of better job opportunities, many people are mostly busy with their work and offices. They usually don’t get time to interact with their neighbours. Also since the city is famous for being crime capital, so people in general refrain for getting to know about their neighbours. Proposal- More generation of activities by Residents’ Welfare Associations so people can come and gather and interact. 5. Public plazas and open areas for recreation- Delhi boasts of 2 huge stadiums and numerous other smaller sports and recreation complexes. The city fairs good in terms of this point. There is Asia’s largest exhibition ground-Pragati Maidan, India Habitat center and numerous other public areas where people can gather and have conferences, exhibitions, and similar performances on arts and culture.
