From my point of view and experience, the five top ranking would be: 1. Zürich, Switzerland 2. Amsterdam, Netherlands 3. Prague, Czech Republic 4. Hong Kong, China 5. Seoul, South Korea The five characteristics I would choose to define a livable city are: 1. Safety 2. Air quality / hygiene / cleanliness 3. Presence of water 4. Quality of infrastructures 5. Density of people and activities If I could add a sixth characteristic to the five first ones, it would be the behavior of the inhabitants. In Zürich, where I am currently living, the mutual respect between people in public areas creates this calm and gratifying atmosphere that is requested for the liveability of a town. However, the point I would improve is the involvement of – every – citizens in this question of sustainability, which is not « just » a lucky situation to enjoy, but a status which has to be forever rethought, especially on the dimension of culture and education infrastructures.
