Answers 2. My place of residence is New Delhi. It is 8 degrees hotter than the surrounding rural areas. The reasons that contribute to the UHI effect of the city are – a) Huge population b) Massive use of air conditioning system c) Heavy vehicular traffic and thus polluted air d) More of concrete built mass than the natural space e) Fully paved streets and roads leaving no space for rainwater permeability. 3. If I take part in the decision-making process of an initiative related to UHI effect, the measures I would propose in order to reduce it and provide more livable environment to the citizen are as follows- a) Promote the use of public vehicles, car pool, bicycles and electric vehicles that would minimise the carbon emission in the atmosphere. b) More emphasis on spaces close to nature and surrounding rather than building blocks of concrete. c) Spread awareness for passive cooling techniques like reflective roofs and radiative roofs to minimise the use of artificial air conditioners. d) In accordance with Evaporation causes cooling, I shall also propose semi-permeable streets and pavements for seepage of water. 4. No, UHI effect is not concerning policy making in my area.
