Step 1: Berlin; Tokyo; Vienna; Zürich; Singapore Step 2: Point A) For me the most important characteristics for a liveable city is its variety and range of cultural events, especially in arts, design and architecture. Then B) the availability and range of restaurants and food cultures (stuff like good Japanese Restaurants) including a diverse range of fast-food offerings (what I like a lot when living in Singapore for a short time). C) Also important is a moderate, non tropic climate (so that is why Tokyo or Singapore are not my top cities). D) Security is also imporant and the feeling that your children are safe. E) finally it is also important that the city you live is not that foreign to what you previously know. Also issues of Language and language culture. That is the reason three of my top cities are German speaking. Step 3: Basel the city I live now is famous for its arts and design culture, but it is nothing compared to the events and rang of offerings in Berlin or Tokyo. Food culture is there, but again variety is missing. Especially there are only a few fast-food offerings.. The climate is very good. People feel safe and secure, but they are at the same time not very open towards foreigners. Switzerland feels very captialistic. While I grew up here in Basel, my wife (who is Japanese) doesn't feel comfortable here, she has only a few friends compared to the time we lived in Berlin. Proposal: Basel should continue to provide a clean and nature-friendly environment at the same time it could try to change laws to allow more street food and other formats to eat in public space. Switzerland must increase govermental support for child care and families. Basel should support more communal living projects. Sustainably neighborhood projects. Childcare from 1 years old should be free like in Berlin.
