3.7 Module 3 – CompulsoryExercise 1: Livability criteria 1. Which are your top livability criteria? In the list below, you can find (in alphabetical order) some of the livability criteria that official surveys use to determine the livability of a city. We want you to select the top-5 criteria that you think contribute the most to a city's livability. Order them with the most important at the top of your list. • Climate • Culture • Economy • Education • Environment • Engagement • Health Care • Housing • Infrastructure • International Connectivity • Job Opportunities • Political Stability • Recreation Possibilities • Safety • Sanitations Standards • Transportation 2. Why do we live where we live? Name the place you live and provide 5 reasons why you live there. Those reasons may not be related to the official livability criteria. Order them with the most important at the top of your list. To support your statements you are asked to provide one or more images from your area of residence, that describe the reasons you selected. 3. To what extend does your own place of residence fulfill your ideal livability criteria? On a scale from 1-100 rate to what extend your place of residence fulfills your ideal livability criteria (i.e. the top-5 criteria you selected in Question 1). Provide also a general livability score for your city, using the same scale (1-100). 4. What would you change? Imagine that you were the mayor of your place of residence. Which would be the first measure you would take to improve livability? 5. Why do we move? In this last part of the exercise, we want you to name three places that you would select to move in case you decided to change a place of residence. In addition, provide us with 5 qualities of these places that played an important role during your decision process. Order them with the most important at the top of your list. To supply: The livability criteria for me has a lot to do with your martial status. As a young unmarried person there are other criteria of importance than when you have a family with children or when you are pensioned. That is why the following answers differ (question 5), as my thoughts were guided martial status of having a family. 1. I do live with my family in Switzerland in the Kanton (Region) of Zurich in the village Zumikon, which is next to Zurich. There are approx. 5'000 inhabitants. Why do I live here? First of all and which will not be mentioned as a livability criterion: Switzerland is a political very stable and safe country. 1 - It's a quiet neighbourhood out in the green just next to the biggest city in Switzerland (10 min by public transport) 2 - Good education for children 3 - excellent infrastructure meaning public transportation, good offer for leisure, close by to good hospitals 4 - Close by to fantastic recreation possibilities: mountains, rivers, lakes 5 - it's between 2 and 5 degrees cooler than in the city: still having snow in wintertime 3. To what extend does your own place of residence fulfill your ideal livability criteria? 1 - Political Stability: 100% 2 - Safety: 100% 3 - Education: 100% 4 - Environment: 100% 5 - Climate: 100% 4. What would you change? Imagine that you were the mayor of your place of residence. Which would be the first measure you would take to improve livability? As a mayor of the village I would above all change the enabling of renting or buying houses for the typical Swiss middleclass. This would improve the social mix of the village and attract much more families with a crucial interest in the daily life of the village. 5. Why do we move? 1 - Switzerland, Zurich: a. a metropolitan feeling in an manageable city, b. excellent education, c. good job opportunities, d. a wide variety on cultural happenings, e. mobility simple done by either public transportation or by foot/cycle. 2 - Norway, Oslo: a. a manageable city in an calm country, b. political stable, c. good education, d. wonderful recreation possibilities, e. climate 3 - Russia, Moscow: a. a real metropolitan feeling b. very interesting country with its inhabitants, c. highly interesting job opportunities, d. extreme wide variety on cultural happenings, e. climate: fantastic winters, wonderful summers and autumn (spring... difficult) - used to live there for 10 years.
