Ecosystem services in my living area: Campinas, SP – Brazil 1. Provisioning services: Food The gross income generated by the sugar cane crop in 2005, in the Metropolitan Region of Campinas, reached 21.5% of the regional total, surpassed only by meat, milk and eggs, with greater expressiveness in chicken meat and eggs. However, fruit crops (with the exception of citrus) presented the highest share (4.7%), when analyzed in relation to state totals. 2. Regulating services: Erosion prevention and maintenance of soil fertility Land degradation is a socioeconomic harm to current generations and poses a huge risk to future generations. There are processes that lead to the degradation of productive areas and indications of soil conservation measures and strategies to recover. For the recovery of the degraded areas, it is possible to use native species that allow multiple uses, meaning that it can present economic return without environmental degradation. 3. Habitat or Supporting services: Habitats for species Campinas contains various concentrated forest areas some of which are home to various animal species. One of the main parks is called Monsenhor Emílio José Salim Ecological Park and it is one of the areas preserved by the municipality, founded in 1987 and occupies 110 hectares. The landscape project is by Roberto Burle Marx and has native species from the region of the Piracicaba river basin and other Brazilian flora, especially palm trees 4. Cultural services: Recreation and mental and physical health The area known as Lagoa do Taquaral is one of the most important public spaces in the city of Campinas. It consists in a variety of recreational and cultural spaces such as: . Lagoa Isaura Telles Alves de Lima (Lake) - it offers the use of lake pedals, a replica of the Caravela Anunciacao and a small water show on the weekends; . Throughout the surrounding green area there are spaces for picnics, playgrounds, public gym equipment, bathrooms and a 3km train course around the lake as well as open sports fields; . The cultural spaces available are the auditorium, Dynamic Museum of Science, The Planetarium
