1. Important stocks and flows include: - People although not strictly stocks and flows - Land - Information 2. People are important for New Zealand as we are an island nation and many miles away from large, civilised continents. We have some indigenous people who have been saturated by colonisation and immigration. The stock was the Maori, and then integrated with British. Our flows now involve our very aging population and all the immigrants coming to NZ for a better life, in particular Auckland. The stocks are also the travelers as the world becomes globalised and travel and media is now more accessible than ever. Land again because although our stock seems static, we very much have developed to an island nation breaking away over the years from other Asia Pacific countries and the continent such as Australia. We developed into these islands that so extremely identify our nation. We are also long and thin as a land mass and with global warming we have a predictably short life in some areas as we are sea level and coastal throughout the country. This is a continual flow, albeit slow, it is gaining pace. Information for us is so accessible. Remember it all came by boat and now we don’t have to be isolated or regionalised. We are as global as the rest of the world when it comes to information online and in the clouds. 3. With people, immigration is increasing and with that brings skilled migrants and capital and these migrant replace our ageing stock of people to ensure a prolonged existence. With land, it is global warming that will control the flow as our low lying land mass decreases and with information – we’ll know all about it, as will everyone else. This will grow in line with global norms as we all become ever more connected.
