First photo taken at Askim in Gothenburg. Second photo taken in Gothenburg city. I currently live about 20 minutes away from Gothenburg city in a place called Skogome. Skogome is in the surrounding rural area of the city. The residential area houses about 3000 people and is combined with houses and apartment blocks. There is alot of nature, close farms, open spaces and small roads. Because of these open spaces the temperature decreases because of wind flow is high and reflectivity from the sun is less because of the distance, that will lower the urban heat island above the area. There is little traffic and almost no trucks passing the area, they will in either case of volume contribute to the UHI because of the heat and gasses they produce. Gas would alter the environment, the CO2 will contribute to the climate change in form of heat that would heaten up the area because of the sun. The major contributor to UHI is the houses. This heat will come from household applienses such as radiator/airconditioner, tv, cooking etc. Therefore the main reason is electricity. I would say that traffic and housing effect the UHI equal in this area. Gothenburg city on the other hand is alot hotter than this rural area. In Gothenburg there is alot more traffic in form of busses, cars, trucks etc. It consists of a network of smart devices such as glowing signs, lamps, telivision screens and other devises. The houses are closer placed and there is alot of service buildings in form of resaturants, pubs and bars, houses for events and many more. The reflectivity from the sun will reflect more on these close houses and contribute more heat. Gasses in the city will provice more to the heating of the climate. All of these activities will contribute to the heat increase of the city, cooking, events, services etc. There is currently about 800000 people living in the city, its not a surprise that it will form a heat island much bigger than the surrounding rural area. In the surrounding rural areas of the city i would propose technology advancements in form of heating and cooling houses. If it was possible to contribute less heat to the energy needed in the daily life of the people, it would increase livability in the area. When it comes to the city I would propose to decrease traffic. There is many ways to do this. You could enhance the technology with electric cars, making them cheaper and more people will buy them, making the air cleaner because theres no gasses and the climate changes in that area will decrease. You can also do small changes like not allowing traffic at certain areas, decreasing noice and air pollution at those areas. Not allowing trucks at certain roads for example is a big change in a small way. You can also enhance the public transportation system, making it easier and cheaper to take the bus for example than the car. Building more bicykle roads and places to put them is another way to deal with the problem, making the city more accessable by bike. Only allowing service veichles in the city centre is another way to decrease traffic. There are many environmental policies in the cities in Sweden. The biggest one is to try to decrease traffic in form of advancements in electric cars and to improve public transportation with these cars. The need for a car is a question that is constantly debated in city planning. If it is easier and cheaper to take public transportation, there is no need for a car in the city. Another action is to build parking for cars at the surrounding rural areas and you would have to take public transportation from these places into the city, making the city car FREE. Only service veichiles would be able to drive in the city.
