1. Checked 2. As mentioned in previous exercises, I live in São Paulo, one of the biggest cities in the world. Here the UHI are a real problem, resulting in temperatures 10°C higher in urban centers than rural areas or neighbor cities. In this link (http://g1.globo.com/hora1/noticia/2017/03/projetos-buscam-dificultar-formacao-de-ilhas-de-calor-nas-grandes-cidades.html) you might find a report about the UHI in SP and people who are working to slow the effects down. On the report, things like high density commercial centers, glass/mirror façade buildings and the excess of vehicles and traffic are responsible for this difference in urban temperature. On the first image attached, we can see how the most part of São Paulo looks like: full of tall buildings, with concrete or glass façade. On the other hand, in the second image attached, we can see Campos do Jordão, a city located 200km from São Paulo, that have temperatures, sometimes, 20°C lower. We can clearly see the difference between the two images, the aspects of the buildings, the way that the cities behave, and the impact it has on the general temperature of each one. 3. First of all, I would map the temperatures (data collection) to have a correct knowledge of where the UHIs are located in the city. Then, specific policies would have to be implemented: reduction of traffic due to encouraging people to use public transportation systems (and most important: provide a quality public transportation system); implement a green-roof/vertical garden policy, due to its benefits in lower the temperatures. Unfortunately, UHIs are usually located in urban centers already consolidated, being (almost) impossible to change its structure. Due to it, any kind of change on streets and sidewalks are out of question. 4. Unfortunately, there are no strong policies concerning UHIs. As shown in the report linked above, researchers from USP (Universidade de São Paulo) are responsible for this matter, but on a third world country, we have a lot of difficulties in the implementation of a environmental policy like this.
