In Sheffield and in the areas nearby there are plenty of building materials available: bricks, steel, timber and stone. However, the trend in contemporary architecture requires cement and glass (in addition to steel), so the local landscape has been slowly but surely been a proof of this. More and more buildings use more glass, parts of which are imported. Even though the city still produces some steel, larger quantities needed in buildings are some of the times imported. When it comes to cement/concrete, for most construction sites the necessary parts are pre-fabricated somewhere else and then brought to the Sheffield sites and just put together like big pieces of a puzzle. China is one of the main countries from which UK imports materials, whilst in Europe they rely more on Italy and Germany. UK is, however, a fortunate case, because only a quarter of the building materials are imported.
